CDC drops the no-sail order in the US, paving the way for Cruising to safely resume! Cruising Is Back: Key Takeaways from New CDC Framework- The CDC's Framework For Conditional Sailing Order is a 40-page document detailing the phased-in approach and return to service for the cruise industry in the United States. Key Takeaways Cruise lines will need to apply for a COVID-19 Conditional Sailing Certificate from the CDC that is based on new health and safety protocols to mitigate the risks of COVID-19. The CDC can approve or deny any permit application, and also revoke it later. Cruise operators will also need to run a series of simulated voyages prior to re-entering service. Simulated voyages will mimic a normal cruise experience and also include drills for potential outbreaks and positive COVID-19 cases aboard. Cruise lines will need a host of new procedures, significant testing capability and response plans to deal with any possible scenario. The CDC will reserve the right to determine passenger and crew capacity, itineraries, ports of call, onboard activities and just about everything else. Cruises from the U.S. can be no longer than seven days. The CDC reserves the right to shorten cruises. Cruise lines must screen passengers and crew before they embark. Crew will be tested on a weekly basis going forward. Ships must conduct "laboratory testing" of all passengers and crew on embarkation and disembarkation in line with CDC guidelines. Ships must maintain standards for hand washing, face covering, social distancing and other COVID-19 prevention matters, per the CDC guidelines. Cruise operators must modify meal and entertainment services to maintain social distancing.**** New Cruise Ship Will Literally Change the Air You Breathe***MSC Cruises has announced that its ship MSC Seashore will be the first in the world to have a new air sanitation system called “Safe Air,” which will improve air quality and cleanliness throughout the vessel.****MSC Seashore is one of the largest and most advanced ships to ever be built in Italy, and is currently under construction at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard. The vessel is set to be delivered to the cruise line in July 2021.**** Second MSC Cruise Ship Resumes European Sailings **** It’s back to sea for MSC Magnifica. The cruise ship has welcomed guests aboard and is doing sailings in both the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.**** In August, MSC’s flagship Grandiosa was the first cruise ship to return to sailings with seven-night night voyages. Thanks to testing at the pier and a social bubble cruise environment, the vessel has sailed incident-free for nearly two months. MSC Cruises is considered a trailblazer in the resumption of cruising around the world. With new health protocols in place and testing required before passengers or crew could board, the company was able to create something of a bubble around the ship. As a result, the ship has been sailing without incident, providing a bit of a roadmap for others who hope to do so moving forward. **** “Every ship that sails gives us more information about how to do this safely,” Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald recently told reporters. “We are all learning from each other.” MSC Cruises has been using new contract-tracing technology. Should someone test positive, this wearable device will allow the cruise line to let others on board know if they came within six feet of the person in question and should be tested as a result. **** Princess Delays Restart of Down Under Cruises Until May 2021**** Virgin Voyages Cancels Remaining 2020 Sailings **** CDC Issues Updated Cruise Warning as No-Sail Set To Expire-Even as cruising has relaunched overseas and several U.S. lines are hoping to welcome guests by the end of the year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has issued a new warning which could throw a wrench into the resumption of cruises. With the current no-sail order set to expire on October 31, the CDC last week released what is known as a Level 3 Warning regarding cruising. In it, they suggest that “travelers defer all cruise travel worldwide.” A Level 3 warning is the organization’s highest designation, with Level 1 suggesting travelers “practice usual precautions” and Level 2 saying they should “practice enhanced precautions.
